In Tibetan imagery, the male form (yab) is to be regarded as eternity and the female (yum) as time. The union of the two is the creative principle of the world. Meditation on yab-yum shatters the paradox and leads to the recollection that all things are at once temporal and eternal, that is to say, the two are essentially one.
